MW Lady Z Makes it Look E-Z In the $10,600 Dunalie Stakes

Saturday, January 11, 2003 - It was a rainy, cold night in Houston at Sam Houston Race Park, but that did not dampen the winning streak onto which the trio of Mike Economopolous, owner, Robert Knight, trainer, and Morris Woods, breeder, was about to embark. Their mare, the 5-year-old MW Lady Z, won the $10,600 7 furlong Dunalie Stakes for Accredited Texas Bred mares and fillies like a true champion. This was the first victory of the night for the now almost famous trio. Not to mention the first of two victories for the jockey, Edwin Alicea.

The pace was set and the lead was held by 3 lengths through the stretch by Royal Ambiance, a multi-stakes winning Accredited Texas Bred champion mare by Monarch AH. But the strategy laid down by Knight and ridden out with expert precision by Alicia won. It was a thrill to watch Alicea maneuver MW Lady Z from a settled position at 7th place at the turn to swing 3 wide, gaining ground with each stride to produce a stunning close at the finish line1 and ¾ lengths ahead of Royal Ambience in 1:38.19. A Virgule Al Maury sired filly, Miss Philly, claimed third at the quarter pole and held on to the finish.

MW Lady Z is by K A Czubuthan who is owned by the K A Czubuthan partnership in which Mike Economopoulos and Morris Woods participate. Her dam is Furno Kiraschka by Mashab, a beautifully bred straight Russian mare. Evidently the pure Polish bloodlines of KA Czubuthan crossed with top Russian breeding proved its mettle.

Callmeiresistible, Ritzy, Amazing Star, Amazingly and D Cherie also ran.

MW LADY Z was allowed to settle then started a rally along the inside on the turn, swung out three wide in upper stretch then was in full flight to be along in time. ROYAL AMBIANCE vied for the lead while three wide, drew off in upper stretch then weakened in late stretch and could not last. MISS PHILLY was inside and vied for the lead, was hard used then gave way in the stretch. CALLMEIRESISTIBLE on the inside and saving ground then made a mild bid but was no threat. RITZY lugged into the gap on the backstretch then failed to menace. AMAZING STAR raced evenly and was no factor. AMAZINGLY vied between rivals for the early lead, was used up and stopped. D CHERIE trailed throughout and was outrun.
