MW Scarlet Lady is First Filly In the Independence Sprint for *Accredited Texas-Bred Fillies/Mares

(July 24, 2004 - Retama Park; San Antonio, Texas) – Looking for another Texas stakes win at Retama Park, MW Scarlet Lady was the first out of the gate and the first to cross the finish line in the $9,000 Independence Sprint for Accredited Fillies and Mares. The KA Czubathan-bred 6 year-old mare dueled for the lead with Connie O while MW Scarlet Lady was three or four wide on the turn. She managed to kick clear of her competition at the quarter-pole and drew off much the best going 6 furlongs in 1:24:49.

The seven-horse field showed the second place finisher, CDB Rowin tracking the front pack while racing four wide through the turn. She then drifted wide late in the turn and though finished willingly at second was 3 ¼ lengths behind MW Scarlet Lady. Clearly Classic trailed early, raced three wide into the turn and moving inside at the five-sixteenths marker, finished with energy to spare up the rail for the show.

MW Scarlet Lady is out of the Tiki Sahiber Ku daughter, Scarlet O Sara and owned by Mike Economopolous and trained by Jerenesto Torrez. She was ridden to victory by the expert handling of jockey Amanda Crandall. Morris Woods, from Austin, Texas, bred MW Scarlet Lady.

Kalsera, Connie O, Amazing Zelda and WPTR Five-Dime also ran.

Ontario HF Remembers His Roots As the Winner of the Independence Sprint for *Accredited Texas-Bred Colts/Geldings

(July 24, 1004 – Retama Park; San Antonio, Texas) – Apparently refreshed from his ride down from Delaware, the odds-on favorite, Ontario HF, took charge of the field of six from the start. Having broken sharply from the gates, Ontario HF dueled on the outside of three rivals, Amazing Games, Sonofazuby and Oraccle but pulled clear while still four wide through the turn, dropped to three wide at the quarter-pole to finish 1 ¼ ahead of the second place horse, Amazing Games.

Not to be discounted, Amazing Games battled determinedly in the stretch drive but just couldn’t reach the winner although he finished 7 ¾ lengths away from the rest. He won his share of the $8,200 purse going 6 furlongs in 1:21:23. Sonofazuby was third.

Bred in Texas by Texans, Suzanne and Rick Flammer, Ontario HF is by Origan and out of the Pepton daughter and great stakes mare, HF Orzonna. The grey, five-year-old horse is owned by Todd Moak. This win began the evening for Ontario HF’s trainer/jockey team, Jerenesto Torrez and Amanda Crandall, at 2-2 having won both Independence Sprints in Race 1 and 2 on the card at Retama Park. This pushed Ontario HF’s lifetime winnings near the 6-figure mark to $97,009.

Oraccle, WPTR Bold Storm and MW Warlord also ran.
