Owner Sam Vasquez took his familiar spot this week as "luckiest man in Texas Arabian Racing" when his horses swept both Arabian races the evening of the Independence Sprint Stakes. Trainer and jockey also enjoyed this dual victory. It was trainer Mike Furr and jockey Omar Rodriguez that pulled off the one-two punch on Thursday night at Retama Park. Sam commented, "It definitely was lucky last night. You have to have some luck to win twice in one night."

The Burning Sand daughter, Sandytiki, was winner of the Fillies and Mares Stake. Sandytiki was the most experienced in this race. She was off alertly, prompting the pace on the outside, playing with the other girls all in a nice bunch. Head to head they all vied for the lead. Sandytiki shook them clear at the top of the stretch and romped the field by 13 lengths. Finish time for the 6 furlongs was 1:20.45.

Second place was the 3 year old baby Vibvilcca who just started her race career this summer and has run 2nd on two occasions. She's owned by the North Star Racing Partnership. Third came Dynaglide, also a baby who started last month and has won one race to date. She's owned by Mark Spears. Amazing Zelda, San Antonio Girl, and Serene Dreams also ran.

Just one hour later, it happened again for Sam and his jockey/trainer team. There were supposed to be two races for the Independence Sprints, one for the boys and one for the girls. The boys race didn't fill, so the track made it an allowance race for everybody. That was so the Arabians we wouldn't lose the race period.

In this $9,000 Allowance race for colts & geldings, Sam's stallion named Mags Mad Max visited the very familiar winners circle. This bay horse has a 12 win collection from all over the country, including 4 stakes wins. His earnings are over $110,000. He ran the 6 furlongs in a blazing 1:18.52, which comes close to the new track record of 1:18.1 just set at Retama Park last month by Nordik Star. Mags Mad Max holds the track record for 6 1/2 furlongs at this track.
