SAM HOUSTON RACE PARK (Saturday, January 14, 2006) – The $11,800 Kontiki Arabian Texas-Bred Stakes was run by four-year-olds and up tonight at Sam Houston Race Park. The winner at a distance of seven furlongs was Mags Mad Max, the 2-5 favorite at a time of 1:34.56. Mags Mad Max, who finished second in this contest last year, is trained by Mike Furr and owned by Sam Vasquez of Galveston. Omar Rodriguez had the mount aboard the five-year-old California-bred. Sonofazuby ran second under Justin Shepherd for trainer Elizabeth Brand and owner Melissa Dueitt. Tt Nordic, at 41-1, was third with rider Quincy Hamilton aboard.

Comments from Winning Rider, Omar Rodriguez:

"He was so relaxed for me. He had not run in a while and got a little tired at the end, but Mike gave me a clue on how he likes to run and he ran perfect."

Comments from Winning Trainer, Mike Furr:

"He's gotten more mature and he's been running against some good horses at Delaware Park. I gave him a break and turned him out on the farm. He got a little tired at the end, going seven furlongs, but he's a real nice horse. I've had him since the word go and I just love him. I am always happy to win for Sam; he was in California last night watching his filly qualify for the Daughters of the Desert. He got me started and gave me my first Arabian to train. He’s not only a great owner, but a good friend."

Comments from Second Place Finisher, Justin Shephed:

"He ran good. They (Brand and Dueitt) just wanted me to take him back and try to make one run of him, and we did. We just let the winner get too much of a head start, and we had too much ground to make up."
