LE FROMAGE Surges to Lead in Stretch Then Holds off Frynge Benefit to win by the bob of a Head

OCTOBER 17, 2009 - LONE STAR PARK - Gail Murphy’s Le Fromage, trained by Helen Shelley and ridden by Charles Fletcher, Jr., took the lead at the sixteenth pole then barely held off second-place finisher Frynge Benefit to win the 2nd Running of the $9,000 Estrellita Ranch Arabian Stakes, for Arabian colts and geldings, 3-years-old and up, over a fast track at Lone Star Park on Saturday.

Le Fromage, an 11-year-old gelding, raced well back in the field behind fractions of 25.59, 50.91 and 1:19.65 before making a six-wide move around the turn to take a ½-length lead deep in the stretch then held off the late charge of the runner up Frynge Benefit. Le Fromage covered the mile distance in 1:49.50

The win improved Le Fromage’s career record to 22 wins from 94 starts and increased his career earnings to $177,071.

Second-place finisher Frynge Benefit made a late move in the final yards of the race but came up a head short of the winner. It was another 2 ¾ lengths back to Buddy of Mine in third. Moulin Rouge MAF, Ala About Me, By Golly Sand, Filsd Croixnoire, Bush Hog, Qjuick Sand PW, Golly Bret, NC Galloping Gus, and Status Symboll completed the order of finish.

Le Fromage paid $10.80, $10.80 and $5.20, Frynge Benefit returned $10.40 and $8.00, and Buddy of Mine paid $8.20 for show.
