2011 Tiki Diablo Stake

Lenas Hot Philly bounds to victory in the Tiki Diablo Stake

September 10, 2011, Retama Park - The Tiki Diablo Stake saw seven 3 and 4 year old fillies come to post, and turned into a match between two sisters and their cousin. It was no surprise to the fans. These three fillies were the wagering choice.

Lenas Hot Philly and Dancelildiamond were in a see-saw battle to the half, a battle soon joined by TM Maddamee just before the turn to the final stretch.

Guided by jockey Larry Taylor, Lenas Hot Philly broke away from her challengers in the turn and kept control of the lead. She bounded off down the lane to win by 4 3/4 lengths. Behind her a challenge was still on.

Coming into the stretch in hot pursuit, Alfredo Contreras had piloted TM Maddamee to fly by Dancelildiamond. But Dancelildiamond and jockey Robert Villafan didn´t give up the goal. Just yards from the finish, Dancelildiamond came back again, reclaiming her second postion just a neck ahead of TM Maddamee at the wire.

Lenas Hot Philly and TM Maddamee are by USA´s leading sire BURNING SAND, and Dancelildiamond is by Burning Sand's Racing Hall of Fame son, LINE DANCER.

Dancelildiamond is trained by Liz Brand, and owned by Toskhara Arabians. TM Maddamee is owned and trained by Ken Danyluk.

All fillies in the Tiki Diablo Stake got off to a good start. TTT Sister Teresa was dualing for the early lead but stopped and finished 7th. Name This Tune and Jet Setting Sandrita were also in the hunt right from the gate and finished 4th and 5th. Another Tyme was unhurried early and finished 6th.

The winner Lenas Hot Philly was already stakes placed in the Texas Yellow Rose Stakes G2 at Sam Houston Race Park earlier this year, and broke her maiden at Lone Star Park last October. The Tiki Diablo Stake is her second win of her career and popped up her lifetime earnings to $16,276. Her dam is Miss Philly, a Virgule Al Maury daughter and a Texas Oaks Winner. Lenas Hot Philly is owned and bred by Sam Vasquez, who was also the sponsor of this race.

The Texas Arabian Breeders Association thanks Sam Vasquez for his generous support of this race for many years. The race is named as a memorial to the late Tiki Diablo ($155,858, Bandera KA x Jikis Ellice, by Kontiki). From years 1996 through 2000, Sam stood in the winners circle 18 times with this star athlete. Tiki Diablo fans all remember enjoying the thrilling performances of this amazing horse. This stake each year serves to remind us of the great Arabian racehorses we have been fortunate to know.
