2012 Texas Arabian Derby (Grade 3)

VALIANT BOY SBFAR WINS BY A NOSE, Texas Arabian Derby G3

November 17, 2012, Retama Park - VALIANT BOY SBFAR edged by Butch Cassidy LZP in a valiant drive for the finish and pleased the betters who chose him as the odds on favorite. The Grade 3 Texas Arabian Derby became a two horse match with VALIANT BOY SBFAR and Butch Cassidy LZP drawing away from the field by 36 lengths.

VALIANT BOY SBFAR has earned $102,370 in his 13 career starts, posting 5 wins, 3 seconds and 1 third. As a three year old, he was winner of the Prix Ourour in Toulouse, and stakes placed in the Prix Tidjani Group 3 stake in La Teste and the Al Rayyan Cup G1 in Deauville, France. This year he won the Bob Magness Arabian Derby G2 at Delaware Park, and was second in the Delaware Park Arabian Classic Handicap G1.

A four year old colt by Darweesh out of Thumb Print, by Barour De Cardonne, VALIANT BOY SBFAR was bred in France by Shaikh Tahnoon Bin Zayed. He is owned by Guy Neivens, trained by Ronald Martino and was piloted to another victory in the Texas Arabian Derby G3 by Filemon Rodriguez.

Second place finisher Butch Cassidy LZP is by Burning Sand out of Bozell, owned by Quarter Moon Ranch and trained by Scott Powell. This was his first race back in Texas since February; he'd been racing in Delaware Park where two weeks ago he ran fourth in the G1 Delaware Park Arabian Classic Handicap.

Jockey Gregorio Rivera had Butch Cassidy LZP under strong urging in the lead by a slim margin in the stretch, then dropped his whip and lost the race in the final few jumps. This was not the only tack mishap in this important Grade 3 event... early in the race Sergeant Pepper MHF went to challenge the lead but his rider lost the irons when the strap broke, and pulled up when the problem could not be managed during the first turn.

Al Waed was piloted by Ernesto Valdez-Jiminez and set the early pace but tired, and Cayucos under Kelsi Purcell contested the pace with the lead group and but could not catch them. By Golly Its Hot by Burning Sand out of Golly Gal, stalked the lead and swung wide past the distressed horse in the first turn but could not catch the top two far in the lead. He settled for third a neck over Cayucos in fourth.

Third place finisher By Golly Its Hot is a four time winner who earned his most recent victory in the TM Fred Texas Arabian Stakes at Lone Star Park. He is owned and bred by Sam Vasquez, trained by Juan Ascencio, and was ridden by Jose Figueroa.

Fourth place finisher Cayucos, by Virgule Al Maury out of Tikis Wing Beat, broke his maiden at Delaware Park in September and also acheived 3 second places at the same track. This was his first race after returning to Texas and his first go with pure stakes company. This gelding is owned by Betty Joe Richards, was bred by Darley Stud Management and is trained by John Youngdale.

The Texas Arabian Derby paid a purse of $22,000. Time of the race was 1:56.97 for the One and One Sixteenth Mile course. Final order of finish: VALIANT BOY SBFAR, Butch Cassidy LZP, By Golly Its Hot, Cayucos, Onetoughtiger MHF, Mister Edd, Al Waed, Sergeant Pepper MHF.
