2013 Texas Arabian Derby (Grade 3)

BILLYJACKS wins for fun in the Grade 3 Texas Arabian Derby

Saturday, November 16, 2013, RETAMA PARK - BILLYJACKS made a mile and one sixteenth look easy, taking charge with ears perked to win the Grade 3 Texas Arabian Derby by 3 1/2 lengths. This charming bay colt by The Kentuckian was up against six other steeds running for a $20,000 Guaranteed purse in the Grade 3 challenge for 4 year old colts and geldings.

Heavy favorite Lil Wayne, a serious looking low rider runner by Burning Sand, broke fast and steadily led the race. Lil Wayne was challenged from the getgo by Djetset Go, a strapping tall gelding by Djet Set De Falgas. The two ran head to head a short time, then Djetset Go seemed content to follow not far off to hold his place into the stretch.

Stix N Stones had gotten a jump to the lead right out of the gate but found himself quickly sitting third. This chestnut son of Line Dancer couldn´t be missed with his three high white stockings and his tail straight up in the air. He was flying a short space behind the two leaders with barely more than a half mile to go, then BILLYJACKS came happily blowing by him on the outside three wide.

BILLYJACKS moved on to overtake Djetset Go around the final turn and aimed for Lil Wayne. He dueled with Lil Wayne for a few strides for fun, then quickly dispatched him, clearing three lengths in a flash. Jockey Ivan Arrellano took a glance back over his shoulder and let BILLYJACKS merrily cruise across the Finish Line with energy to spare.

There was a slight bit of commotion with the very green, Nazhar De Blaziet son Hard Rock Czar at the 7/8 pole, and also Zells Bells came under wraps and was bumped four wide to lose ground in the first turn. Zells Bells, a 3 time winner by SW Zell, moved up to finish fourth over the fancy Stix N Stones who had fallen back. Fastandfurious, a maiden by Chndaka, was eager to press the pace early on but lost his enthusiasm by the half.

BILLYJACKS had a fairly casual beginning to his career in 2012, with 6 starts and no wins to show for it. He ran 4th in the Lone Star Futurity as a maiden last December, and won his first race in Houston at the beginning of 2013. He started showing better consistency after having a summer vacation, and at Lone Star Park this fall he posted a second and a third. This victory made his second lifetime win bringing his record to 2/8(2-1-1) $18,030. BILLYJACKS is owned and trained by his breeder Christine Byrom. He is out of a Kong daughter named Iisiam.

Second place went to Lil Wayne, with congratulations to his trainer Kenny Massey and his owner Quarter Moon Ranch, and breeder Scott Powell. Third placed Djetset Go is owned and bred by Jane Teutsch and trained by Crystal Jack.

The full order of finish was: BILLYJACKS, Lil Wayne, Djetset Go, Zells Bells, Stix N Stones, Fastandfurious, and Hard Rock Czar. Congratulations and many thanks to all the contenders for another exciting and entertaining race.
