LUCKY SAND Gets Lucky in the Photo Finish
of the Lone Star Arabian Colts & Geldings Futurity

Saturday, December 14, 2013 - RETAMA PARK - LUCKY SAND had a truly lucky day beating the favorite RB Champagne Taste by barely a nose in the $15,000 Lone Star Arabian Colts & Geldings Futurity on Saturday night. The start was good for all in this six furlong stakes race for 3 year olds, and RB Champagne Taste shot out of the gates like a cannon. But it didn´t stay so good for the Burning Sand son LUCKY SAND as he got shuffled back not long after the start.

LUCKY SAND tried to make up ground but was shut off from the rail behind Djet Propelled, who was not living up to his name this evening. This green maiden was on his first start of a lifetime and settled along the rail, remaining there throughout the race.

Jockey Gregorio Rivera altered the course of his mount LUCKY SAND after being stuck behind the non-jet propelled colt the first furlong, and proceeded between rivals down the backstretch.

Ahead in the lead was TM Dauterive, another Burning Sand son piloted by Ernesto Valdez-Jiminez. This colt was under a snug hold with neck and head high after winning an early duel with Chipofftheoleblock.

TM Dauterive was next fending off a serious challenge by the ominous RB Champagne Taste who was lurking on his outside. These two duelled hard, and with less than a quarter mile remaining RB Champagne Taste began to take charge and pull ahead.

LUCKY SAND was gaining ground but was racing four wide and under the whip as they turned for home. In the stretch he was still three lengths behind the two leaders when his jockey went to the left handed whip. LUCKY SAND charged up to secure second position and caught up just at the wire for an exciting photo finish.

LUCKY SAND is owned by Mark Powell and trained by Scott Powell. He is a bay colt out of the unraced french mare Vague De Gemme, by Baco Du Cassou, and was bred by Joe and Betty Gillis. This is the third win out of nine starts for LUCKY SAND, bringing his earnings to $28,015. His record also includes three third place finishes, the most recent his stakes placing in the Grade 3 Arabian Stallion Stakes at Lone Star Park.

Second place RB Champagne Taste is a grey colt by Majd Al Arab, out of the 3 time winning mare Djenzel, by Djendel. He is owned by his breeder Dianne Waldron of Rosebrook Farm, trained by Jerenesto Torrez, and was ridden by Gerardo Mora. RB Champagne Taste now touts a record of one win and two seconds from three starts. He finished second his first try at Delaware Park, and he won his previous start three weeks ago at Retama Park.

Third place went to TM Dauterive, a bay colt also trained by Jerenesto Torrez. TM Dauterive is out of the mare Sliceofspice, a six time winner by Flaming Tigre. He was bred by Todd Moak, and is owned by Les Crane. This colt got his first start at Delaware Park running fourth in the Grade 3 Alec Courtelis Arabian Juvenile Stakes, and has a record of one win, one second and two thirds from 5 starts.

The remaining finishers in order were Para Que Sluffy, by Parador; Chipofftheoleblock, by Gorec; and Djet Propelled, by Djet Set De Falgas.
