2013 Texas Arabian Oaks

ZELLS FOLLIES Digs In for a Game Win in the Texas Arabian Oaks

Saturday, November 16, 2013, RETAMA PARK - ZELLS FOLLIES owned by Mark Kulow and ridden by Alfredo Contreras posted a game win in the Texas Arabian Oaks for four year old fillies. She beat the determined Etres Chic in a photo finish, while the bettors' favorite Sand On Fire by Burning Sand hung on for third. Dafrynch, a filly by Dahess whose previous seven starts were in Delaware, drove up fast on the outside finishing only a length and a half behind for fourth.

Jane Teutsch is the breeder of the first three placers, and she also bred the 5th place runner Chere Bebe. The one mile race paid a purse of $20,000. Eight fillies were entered in this annual contest at Retama Park. Nine had been nominated and remained eligible.

The start was good for all on a fast track. A big grey filly Amazing Cheri MHF by Amazing Son went to the front to set a comfortable pace. The grey led willingly to the quarter pole, just before the final turn a quarter mile from the finish. Running closely with her was Chere Bebe by Djet Set De Falgas. Chasing in third and making her move was Etres Chic, another filly by Djet Set De Falgas. Amazing Cheri MHF fell back and then Etres Chic overtook her stablemate half-sister. At the same time Sand On Fire made a steady advance from the rear. A nicely bunched herd of contenders rounded the final turn and the race was on in the stretch. All were to be displaced by ZELLS FOLLIES who gamely dug in for the drive.

The Kenny Massey trained ZELLS FOLLIES won by barely a neck. ZELLS FOLLIES is sired by S W Zell and out of the mare Follies Bergere, by Virgule Al Maury.

Crystal Jack trained the second place finisher Etres Chic and third place finisher Sand On Fire, both fillies with Teutsch family ownership. These fillies were ridden by Juan Rosales and Kelsi Purcell.

The final order of finish was ZELLS FOLLIES, Etres Chic, Sand On Fire, Dafrynch, Chere Bebe, TTT Tiny Tina, TM Its Just Aride, and Amazing Cheri MHF.

The Texas Oaks and Texas Derby for Arabian 4 year olds takes nominations each year in the late spring to early summer, with a pay-in schedule to sustain the nomination and an entry and starter fee. Total of all payments to race in the Oaks or Derby was $900. The races paid purse distributions of 50% to the winner, 22% to second, 12% to third, 7% to fourth, 5% to fifth and 4% to sixth placed horses. With over half of all the contenders earning their fees back plus a profit, the Texas Oaks and Derby were a good bet for owners. Watch for the 2014 Texas Stakes opportunities and nominate your Arabians for next year´s races.
