February 22, 2014 - Sam Houston Race Park - BURNING FLEET went to post with a talented field of 10 other four year old colts Saturday night in the Grade 2 Texas Six Shooter Arabian Stake. The bay son of Burning Sand pulled off an exciting victory, stalking the pace until the stretch and then holding off a late charge by the ominous grey RB Champagne Taste. He won by 3/4 of a length.
BURNING FLEET is owned and bred by Joe and Betty Gillis. He is sired by Burning Sand, and out of the mare Angel Proof, by NF Proof. This was only the fourth start and second win for BURNING FLEET, who broke his maiden at Delaware Park last summer. This was his first start in Texas.
Second place coming fast, RB Champagne Taste had posted three wins in a row in Texas, his last win on this same track only two weeks ago. RB Champagne Taste is sired by Madj Al Arab, and out of Djenzel. He is bred and owned by Dianne Waldron of Rosebrook Farm, and is trained by Jerenesto Torrez.
Third and fourth place went to A Class Act and Thess Is Awesome, stablemates from Cre Run Enterprises, trained by Lynn Ashby. Both colts had been training in snow and ice in the north to prepare for this race, their first start since the fall at Delaware Park. Thess Is Awesome went straight to the lead to give way late, while A Classs was unhurried and made a rally in the stretch.
A Classs Act is sired by Nivour De Cardonne and out of the mare Toppoftheclass. Thess Is Awesome is by Dahess and out of In Awe, and his two previous Grade 3 wins made him the bettors favorite.
Other finishers in order: Lucky Sand, RB Djustify, RB Rich, Madjanthis, Chipofftheoleblock and Djet Propelled.
The winner BURNING FLEET was saddled by Jerenesto Torrez and ridden by Ernesto Valdez-Jiminez. Running time for the 7 furlongs was 1.32.24
